Jason Reeves, horticulturist and curator at the University of Tennessee Gardens says gardeners still have plenty of tasks during autumn. Reeves offers these timely free tips to help you keep your landscape and garden in top shape:

Shrubs and Trees

 • November is an ideal time to plant or transplant trees, shrubs and fruit crops. Be sure to water thoroughly, then mulch newly planted plants with a good 3- to 4-inch layer of mulch. Newly planted evergreens should be checked regularly during the winter to ensure they are getting enough water.
 • Mulch existing trees and shrubs to reduce weeds, provide insulation from freezing temperatures and conserve moisture.

Perennials, Annuals and Bulbs

 • Reduce peony botrytis blight and hollyhock rust by removing and disposing of all leaves and stems this fall. Roses should have all their leaves raked from beneath to prevent black spot. Dispose of plant materials in the trash, not the compost pile. This will reduce the carryover of disease during the winter and you will have less trouble next year.
 • Cut chrysanthemum and other perennials’ stems close to the ground once they have begun to die back. Leave ornamental grasses to provide winter interest until spring.
 • You can continue to transplant perennials throughout the fall and winter unless they are marginally hardly in your zone. Those marginal plants are best planted in spring. Now is also an ideal time to plant spring-flowering bulbs. Consider planting some of the minor bulbs such as winter aconite, glory of the snow, species tulips, crocus, narcissus and grape hyacinths.
 • Winter annuals such as pansies, violas, Dianthus chinensis, red mustard, snapdragons, ornamental cabbage and kale can still be planted – the earlier in the month, the better.
 • Mulch flower beds with 2 to 3 inches of good compost or fine mulch to keep soil temperature stable and prevent winter plant injury from frost heaving. As the compost or fine mulch decomposes, it will enrich your garden soil as well.

Lawn Care

 • It’s not too late to fertilize your cool-season fescue lawn. Use a turf fertilizer and follow label directions. This encourages good root development and helps improve the color of the lawn.
 • Keep heavy layers of leaves raked from the lawn. They should be composted. Another option is to mow over a light layer of leaves, turning them into mulch, which adds important nutrients back to the lawn.
 • November is the month for the first herbicide application for wild garlic and wild onion. Ask your county UT Extension office for information on herbicides and rates of application.

Fruits and Vegetables

 • As soon as leaves fall from fruit trees and berry plants, spray for the first time with a dormant horticultural oil. This helps control overwintering insects and disease. Apply according to label instructions.
 • Incorporate compost in the annual and vegetable gardens for next growing season.
 • Complete removal of fallen leaves and debris to help eliminate overwintering insects and disease organisms.
 • Cut the tops off asparagus plants and mulch with a good layer of compost.
 • Cover strawberries 2 inches deep with hay or straw to reduce weeds and increase winter protection.
 • Secure raspberry and blackberry canes to stakes to protect them from wind whipping.

January Lawn/Landscape Tips and Tricks https://daviskeeoutdoor.com/january-lawn-landscape-tips-and-tricks/ Sun, 01 Jan 2023 08:00:00 +0000 https://daviskeeoutdoor.com/?p=6821 Read more…]]> Davis Kee Outdoor is dedicated to helping our customers create beautiful and healthy outdoor spaces. January is a great time to start planning for your lawn and landscape for the upcoming year, and we have some tips to help you get started.

Lawn Care:

January is the ideal time to start preparing your lawn for the spring. Begin by removing any leaves or debris from your lawn to ensure that it can properly breathe and receive sunlight. This will also help prevent the growth of mold and mildew. If the ground isn’t frozen, you can also aerate your lawn by using a lawn aerator or by renting one. Aerating your lawn will help improve the soil’s ability to absorb water and nutrients, which will lead to a healthier lawn.

Landscape Care:

January is also a great time to start planning any landscaping projects you may want to tackle in the upcoming year. Consider adding new trees, shrubs, or flowers to your yard to add color and interest. When choosing plants, be sure to select varieties that are native to the Chattanooga area and can tolerate the area’s climate. This will ensure that they are well-suited to the local environment and will require less maintenance in the long run.

Planting Tips:

January is a great time to plant trees and shrubs. The cool temperatures and dormant soil make it easier for plants to establish roots before the spring growing season begins. When planting, make sure to dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball but only as deep as the root ball. Backfill the hole with the soil you removed and water well.

In addition, mulch can be applied around trees, shrubs, and flowers to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and moderate soil temperature.

Overall, January is a great time to start planning for your lawn and landscape. By following these tips, you can ensure that your lawn and landscape will be healthy and beautiful for the upcoming year. At Davis Kee Outdoor, we’re here to help you create the outdoor space of your dreams. If you have any questions or need help with your lawn and landscape, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re always happy to help!

The Importance Of Leaf Removal https://daviskeeoutdoor.com/the-importance-of-leaf-removal/ Sat, 01 Oct 2022 09:00:00 +0000 https://daviskeeoutdoor.com/?p=6047 Read more…]]> There are a number of facets to cultivating and growing a healthy lawn. As the cooler temperatures of Autumn begin to be felt in the evening and overnight hours, there are some important steps that you need to take to maintain the care of your lawn so that it will survive the cold winter months and re-emerge healthy, thick, and full when spring comes. One of these important maintenance tasks is leaf removal. Leaf removal is a vital step to keeping your lawn healthy in the autumn, and also prepare it for winter.

A thick carpet of dead leaves left on your lawn can suffocate and kill your grass. It also reduces the evaporation of water, and can provide concealed shelter to dangerous pests. Fall leaf removal is important, and Davis Kee Outdoor can help. We have the professional crews and state of the art equipment to handle any size leaf removal projects.

Removing Leaves Keeps Grass Growing

Allowing a thick layer of leaves to accumulate across your lawn suffocates your grass by blocking its access to sunlight and air. When your grass is unable to receive proper sunlight and air, it is unable to grow. A lack of nutrients contributes to weaker grass that is less resilient and unable to fight off diseases and pests. Removing leaf clutter from your lawn ensures your grass can breathe properly and soak up the sunlight and air it needs for proper growth. Davis Kee Outdoor can remove leaves to help ensure your grass is able to grow optimally.

Leaves Capture Water & Hide Mold Growth

Your lawn needs to breathe and having access to air is pivotal for effective water evaporation. When leaves build up on your lawn, they prevent water evaporation and trap moisture underneath their layer. This moisture creates the perfect environment for fungi, diseases, and mold. Mold is harmful to your lawn and can also be harmful to your health. When you walk across the leaves on your lawn, it can disturb the mold, thus releasing mold spores into the air. Breathing in mold spores can cause respiratory and other health problems. To prevent mold growth on your lawn, vigilantly remove all leaves and keep your lawn well-maintained during the fall season. Davis Kee Outdoor can handle leaf removal professionally and efficiently so you don’t have to. A professional leaf removal company such as Davis Kee Outdoor makes leaf removal fast and efficient, so you can keep your lawn, and your family, healthy and safe during the season.

Pests Hide In Your Leaves

Your yard hosts pests. Leaf clutter that collects on top of your lawn increases the number of pests that are able to infest your yard. Snakes and spiders in particular love dark, damp places where they can seek solace and warmth A layer of wet, rotting leaves provides them with just that. This increases your risk of encountering one of these pests in your yard. To decrease your potential of running into these pests, it’s best to keep your lawn free and clear of leaves and other debris.

Fall is here, and lawns will be covered in thousands of dead leaves. Our professional team at Davis Kee Outdoor can quickly remove any leaves or other debris from your lawn and ensure your grass is kept green and healthy! Contact us today!

Lawn & Garden Tips For August https://daviskeeoutdoor.com/lawn-garden-tips-for-august/ Mon, 01 Aug 2022 20:00:00 +0000 https://daviskeeoutdoor.com/?p=5582 Read more…]]> Lawn Tips
 • Leave the Clippings. Leave grass clippings on your lawn. As they deteriorate, they fertilize your turf.
 • Mow In the Evening. Mowing at this time of day puts less stress on your grass (and you). The grass is dry and temperatures are cooler.
 • Stop Lawn Invasion. Keep your lawn edged so grasses like Bermuda don’t invade your planting sites. Watch for Fire Ant Mounds and Armyworms. Apply a fire ant killer as soon as you spot the hill to eliminate them until winter. Spray Captain Jack’s Deadbug brew do rid your lawn of armyworms.
 • No Fun in Fungus. The hot, humid weather is perfect for lawn fungus-like brown patches and fairy rings. If you see lawn issues take a picture, bring in a sample and the Pike experts can help you find the best solution.

In the Garden

 • Feed for Energy. Plants need extra nutrients to make it through the long, hot summer days. Stop in and let a Pike expert help you select the best fertilizer for your garden plants.
 • Dead-Head for Continuous Blooms. Continue to remove faded blooms on annuals such as geraniums, marigolds, petunias, salvia, verbena, and zinnias. Doing so will keep the plants blooming throughout the season.
 • Rejuvenate Seasonal Annuals. By this point in the summer, some annuals may have become spindly or leggy. It is a good time to pinch or trim them back by as much as ½ their current height. They will soon begin to leaf out, look thicker and start to bloom again.
 • Clean the Crape Myrtles. Remove spent flowers as they occur and you may be rewarded with a second crop of blooms.
 • Harvest Your Efforts. August is the best month for harvesting home-grown produce from tomatoes, peppers, eggplant to basil and rosemary. Have more than you can eat? Try canning the produce for later use or share with a neighbor.
 • Bag those Worms. Look for hungry bagworms on trees and evergreens. To control these caterpillars and prevent them from defoliating the plants, remove them by hand or spray with an appropriate insecticide.
 • Water Wisely. Plants setting berries like pyracantha or hollies and plants setting flower buds for next year’s blooms, like azaleas and camellias will benefit from a little extra water. Most established plants need about one inch of water per week to perform at their best. Water just until you see runoff between 6-10am.
 • Maintain the Mulch. Make sure all planting areas have a two-inch layer of mulch. Mulches help to regulate soil temperature, conserve moisture in the soil and prevent weed development.
 • Protect Yourself. Don’t become a victim of sunburn! Be sure to wear a large brimmed hat with UV protection while playing in the dirt or simply relaxing outside.

February Outdoor Tasks https://daviskeeoutdoor.com/february-outdoor-tasks/ Tue, 01 Feb 2022 09:00:00 +0000 https://daviskeeoutdoor.com/?p=3175 Read more…]]> Source: Clemson University

Things to do:

Bulbs – it’s time to buy your fall-flowering bulbs, such as dahlias, gladioli, cannas, and lilies. Don’t plant them yet, but wait for warmer weather (the soil temperature must be at least 55 degrees F).

Tree Fruits – spray your tree fruits this month with a dormant oil (such as volck oil) to control mites and scale. The oil simply covers the tree and suffocates the insects, and it also helps inhibit sporulation of some diseases. (Note – do not apply dormant oil when the tree is not dormant. Doing so in the spring, summer, and fall will cause damage – the tree cannot transpire properly when covered with the oil during the wrong season.)

Fertilizer – it’s time for the first application of fertilizer for fescue and other cool-season grass lawns. Follow the recommendations on your soil test report for your lawn. DON’T fertilize warm-season grass lawns early in the winter! See Fertilizing Lawns for more information. If you have not soil-tested your lawn areas in the past 12 months, now is a great time!

Fire ants – some of the extended-protection broadcast fire ant treatments (such as those containing fipronyl) require 2 inches of water to be activated, then require a two-week period after the water is added to begin protecting your lawn. Applying those products now will have them active and ready for the ants by the time they begin to “pop up.”

Henbit – this nice little lawn weed can be a problem. Treat now to prevent its return this summer.

Trampweed – if you saw this fluffy-looking weed last summer and fall, now is the time to treat your yard to prevent its return. This should be your second treatment if you have a warm-season lawn; it should be your first if you have a cool-season lawn (such as fescue).

Irrigation – believe it or not, if you have a warm-season lawn you might need a little water this month. If there is an extended dry period during the winter (4+ weeks), adding one inch of water (on a warm day, of course) will help the soil retain heat and may help prevent injury to cold-sensitive grasses.

Pruning – now is a great time to prune most trees and shrubs. However, do not prune azalea, dogwood, forsythia, redbud and rhododendron – they should be pruned after they bloom, since they set blooms in the fall. Almost anything that blooms after June 1 (except oakleaf hydrangea and late-flowering azalea cultivars) can be pruned safely now.

Tree Planting – the winter months when trees are dormant are excellent times to plant. Be careful that you do not plant them too deep or with too much soil amendment.

Vegetables – Some planting times for more common vegetables
Asparagus crowns – early February – late March
Cabbage – Feb. 15 – Apr. 1
Garden Peas – Feb. 1 – 15
Turnips – Feb. 20 – Apr. 1
